Matanuska River Watershed Funding Projects

NRCS has two active watershed funding projects addressing property loss, erosion and water quality on the Matanuska River. The Matanuska River Terrace Erosion Area Acquisition Pilot Project, Federal Register Notice period was completed on July 12, 2006. The project is now in the implementation phase at the two designated site locations. The appropriate link, which can be found here, will take you to the Federal Register, where the Finding Of No Significant Impact (FONSI) Notice is posted. This project has completed the NEPA requirements and is underway in implementation.

The FONSI and Federal Register Notice for the Construction in the Matanuska River of Spur Dike #5 can be found here. This project is in the final days of the Federal Register Notice period and remains open to review until the first week in September. Construction implementation is anticipated to begin in October according to the project sponsors schedule. This will coincide with the permitted open windows identified by federal and state agencies.

Contact for each project is identified in the online documents, or you may direct inquiries to State Biologist, NEPA Compliance Coordinator, Bill Wood          (907)761-7761; bill.wood@ak.usda.gov.
